Metaphorically understood as taking up one’s own cross. And this is how Christians believe salvation and prosperity is achieved. So it seems like both social groups, you and your husband, as devout atheists, and the symbolically inclined Christians in this case, agree on the primary ethical importance of personal responsibility in living an ethically good life.
