The Great Shadow

This world was created from the light of the eternal flame, from which the great shadow will necessarily follow. So long as humanity has stood on this world, illuminated by the eternal flame, the great shadow has been cast, taking on a life of its own. The great shadow will obscure and confuse, distorting the world within its grasp and possessing those lost within its darkness.

Most who have seen the great shadow are unable to recognize it, while those who can identify it are unable to speak of its form. Unable to be observed directly, the great shadow can be seen only through the darkness it casts. The great shadow is that which consumes, and devours, possesses and paralyzes. What has been built can only be dismantled by shadow, and all that is built for destruction is guided by the seductive grasp of the darkness. Under the influence of the shadow, that which was flourishing becomes famine and those who grow paradise then stagnate in its decay. The evils of this world are generated from the great shadow, seeking to consume all into the void.

The armies of eternity have sought to wage war against the great shadow, with weapons drawn, they valiantly enter into the darkness guided by courage and conviction, with the shared intention of destroying the great shadow once and for all. Within the chaos and confusion of the darkness, the armies of eternity turn their blades on themselves, mistaking each other as agents of the great shadow and becoming locked in an eternal war.

The legions within the armies of eternity were once fixed on their shared enemy, but the darkness distorts their ranks, causing each other’s banners to become sigils of the great shadow. Turning brother against brother, sister against sister, the darkness blinds the noble warriors as they turn their blades on one another in the name of destroying the great shadow. Wherever the great shadow moves, the armies of eternity follow, forever dedicated to eradicating the darkness.

Within the great shadow can be found an even greater light that can keep the darkness at bay. The eternal light can only be found by those who know how to find it, and understand how to resist the possessing grasp of the darkness. This light is a small flame at first, but its blaze can be intentionally spread to overcome the darkness and drive the great shadow away, until one-day it will return again with a newfound strength when the light has dimmed and the story will continue.
